Careers & Vocational Education


The Head of Vocational Education and Training (VET) manages, in partnership with the Head of Learning Areas and Heads of Department, the VET Qualifications offered at Mercy College.

All the VET Qualifications offered at Mercy College are nationally recognised.

On completion, students will be issued with the full qualification by the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) used to auspice within Mercy College. A full list of RTO’s used at Mercy College can be found below. Those students who do not complete all units of competency will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.

Students at Mercy College can complete VET Qualifications either internally delivered by trained Mercy College teachers or externally attending TAFE or private RTO’s one or two days of the school week. All VET qualifications attained contribute towards a students’ WACE.

The Careers and Vocational Education (C.A.V.E) is focused on being a Careers and Vocational Education and Training hub and resource centre for students at Mercy College. The C.A.V.E is located in the Trade Training Centre facing the McAuley school building. Personal contact, combined with our commitment to communication with both students and parents, enables the C.A.V.E to achieve the best outcomes for our students.

The C.A.V.E will be open most lunchtimes with scheduled seminars and events for students that are careers focused. Students are encouraged to check the C.A.V.E notice board in their form room and the daily notices for upcoming seminars and events.


Careers education at Mercy College is designed to help students identify and cultivate their individual strengths and further empower them to apply these strengths to achieve academic and personal goals. Through their designated career education lessons, students are guided in developing a career plan which is the result of careful self- examination, not only of the student’s capabilities and knowledge but of their values and priorities.

Career education students at Mercy are taught how to explore the broad range of career options and pathways available to them. Through guided self-awareness, research and careful planning students develop the skills to make informed choices in terms of subject selection and post-school pathways.

All students participate in Career Education in Year 9 and 10. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are welcome to make an individual appointment to see Ms Heather Gardiner the Careers Counsellor to help them further with their planning. 

Workplace learning

Workplace Learning is a School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) Endorsed Program. Students do not receive grades but successful completion will receive two units equivalence. Workplace Learning enables students to develop and be assessed on, generic industry-based skills whilst in the workplace. Successful completion of the hours and a log book counts towards the WACE.

The Workplace Learning endorsed program provides an opportunity for a student to demonstrate, and develop increasing competence in, the core skills for work, often referred to as generic, transferable or employability skills. A student learns to apply and adapt the workplace skills that are necessary to understand and carry out different types of work, and that play a key role in lifelong learning.

To complete this endorsed program, a student works in one or more real workplace/s to develop a set of transferable workplace skills. The student must record the number of hours completed and the tasks undertaken in the workplace in the Authority’s Workplace Learning Logbook. The student must also provide evidence of his/her knowledge and understanding of the workplace skills by completing the Authority’s Workplace Learning Skills Journal after each 55 hours completed in the workplace.  

Developing competence in workplace skills assists an individual to gain employment, and in the longer term, to progress within the organisation or industry area in which they are employed, and to contribute successfully to the organisation’s objectives and to the wider community.

Any students in Year 11 and 12 who are interested in Workplace Learning are encouraged to contact the Head of Vocational Education & Training and/ or the Careers and Guidance Counsellor.
