Curriculum - Learning Areas - Science

It is the goal of Mercy College’s science curriculum that “science…always be accompanied by the wisdom that belongs to the permanent spiritual heritage of humanity.”
(Pope John Paul II, October, 1981).

The Science Department staff at Mercy College believe that studying Science enhances the students’ understanding of the physical and biological environment in which they live. The Science Department is dedicated to developing the skills of understanding and collaboration in Science teaching and learning through laboratory investigations, discussion, interaction, and communication. Students develop strong critical thinking and problem solving skills, see connections among various disciplines of Science, study real world applications and use technology throughout the program. The practice of Science will help the students grow and enable them to use their understanding of Science to serve others.

It is our aim to help students become self-directed learners with highly developed critical thinking skills. We put a strong emphasis on integrating the different fields of Science with other academic disciplines. The high expectations set for the College’s preparatory courses will enable our students to have a smooth transition into further education or the workforce with the tools to enable them to be life long learners.
