At Mercy College, the study of English assists students to develop an appreciation of language, and to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences. Through the interpretation of fiction and non-fiction, as well as genres such as poetry, drama and film, students are exposed to conventions of text production. Students are encouraged to develop their own informed impressions, and to share these opinions confidently with their peers.

Students are encouraged to develop the ability to write in ways appropriate to various situations, and to become confident with many different modes of presentation, including oral presentations, formal debates and panel discussions. In addition, students are given structured opportunities to develop skills of study and research, so that they will become independent learners.

The Curriculum Framework enables all students to achieve at a level which proves them competent in the four major outcomes of Speaking and Listening, Viewing, Reading and Writing. All four Outcomes are inter-related , so that progress in one will impact on understandings in another Outcome. From Year Ten, students may elect to study the Literature Course. In Years Eleven and Twelve there are Courses in English as an Additional Language for those students who qualify.

The aim of the English Learning Area at Mercy College is to provide the best possible teaching and learning experiences in this dynamic area. Students will be given varied opportunities to participate actively in English programs which will prepare them for their next phase of education and which will assist them in interacting with our language-mediated world.
